Gene Conversion in the Pasadena Strain of ASCOBOLUS IMMERSUS.

چکیده
TUDIES on a strain of Ascobotus immersus collected in Pasadena, California ( Y u S U N 1964) have shown unusually high rates of gene conversion at a number of sites of white-spored mutations. In most such examples conversion ratios 5 t : 3w (wild type: white) and especially 3+: 5w have been common. Closely linked sites frequently have had very similar distributions of the different conversion ratios. In some instances mutants recovered following gene conversion (e.g., two of the six white segregants in 2+:6w asci) have characteristics considerably altered from those of the parental mutant, and from mutants recovered following regular segregation. Some of the data to be reported have a bearing on the lengths of regions undergoing repair-assuming that repair is the mechanism actually responsible for gene conversion ( HOLLIDAY 1964; WHITEHOUSE and HASTINGS 1965; and others).

The Interactions of Three Widely Separated Loci Controlling Conversion Properties of w Locus I in ASCOBOLUS IMMERSUS.
Gene conversion properties of white (w) ascospore locus I in the Pasadena strains of Ascobolus immersus are controlled by complex interactions between three separate conversion control factors ( ccfs), which can give conversion frequencies at wI ranging from less than 1% up to 33%. ccf-2, which has three alleles, is very closely linked to wI but does not usually co-convert with it. ccf-2(K) and...
متن کاملThe intergradation, genetic interchangeability and interpretation of gene conversion spectrum types.
In the Pasadena strains of Ascobolus immersus, the gene conversion propperties of 29 induced (nine UV, nine NG, and 11 ICR-170) and nine spontaneous white-ascospore mutations have been studied. Each mutant was crossed to three types of derived wild-type strains; single mutants often gave very different conversion results in the three types of crosses, with any or all of the following changes in...
متن کاملNon-locus-specific polygenes giving responses to selection for gene conversion frequencies in Ascobolus immersus.
Selection for higher and lower meiotic conversion frequencies was investigated in the fungus Ascobolus immersus. Strains carrying the same known gene conversion control factors, which have major effects on conversion frequencies at their specific target locus, sometimes gave significant differences in conversion frequency. Selection for high or low conversion frequencies at the w1-78 site was p...
متن کاملThe suppression of gene conversion and intragenic crossing over in Ascobolus immersus: evidence for modifiers acting in the heterozygous state.
Four distinct systems cv1, cv2, cv4 and cv6 behaving as monogenic factors have been found in the stock 28 of Ascobolus immersus. They each specifically suppress gene conversion in a spore pigmentation gene (respectively, b1, b2, b4 and b6). In the gene b2, where this phenomenon was studied in most detail, the effect of cv2 on the suppression of gene conversion is almost total; intragenic recomb...
متن کاملIsolation of the Ascobolus immersus spore color gene b2 and study in single cells of gene silencing by methylation induced premeiotically.
The ascomycete Ascobolus immersus has been extensively used as a model system for the genetic study of meiotic recombination. More recently, an epigenetic process, known as methylation induced premeiotically (MIP), that acts on duplicated sequences has been discovered in A. immersus and has raised a new interest in this fungus. To try and extend these studies, we have now cloned the A. immersus...
